Prisma is an object-relational mapping toolkit, commonly called an ORM, for Node.js and TypeScript applications. It helps developers interact with databases using a structured programming interface. Instead of writing SQL for every operation, developers can use Prisma Client to create, retrieve, update, and delete records.
A central part of Prisma is its schema, which describes data models, fields, and relationships. For example, a blog application can define users, posts, and comments, including how they connect. This provides a clear representation of the application’s data structure and helps keep database access consistent.
Prisma Client generates types based on the schema, providing editor suggestions and compile-time checks in TypeScript projects. These features help developers catch incorrect field names and incompatible query inputs. Prisma also supports querying related records, selecting specific fields, and grouping operations into transactions.
Prisma Migrate helps manage schema changes for supported relational databases, while Prisma Studio provides a visual interface for viewing and editing data. Used alongside application frameworks such as Express and Next.js, Prisma can simplify database development. Developers still need appropriate input validation, authorization, and database design to build reliable applications.
